Computer Virus Threatens Vital Industrial Sabotage

Siemens said the malicious program with the name Stuxnet that exploit weaknesses in the Windows operating system. While the deployment is done through a USB Flashdrive.


"Just open the flash that was enough to activate it. Siemens recommends to not use a USB stick," said Alexander Machowetz, a spokesman for Siemens.


After infecting Siemens SCADA system, a malicious program that will send data to a computer server at a remote location. From there, important data could be stolen or even control that system could be taken over by irresponsible parties.


Fortunately, the spread of malicious programs is somewhat hampered because most of the SCADA system is not connected to the internet directly, so that its spread practically only through the USB stick. However, so far there is one client Siemens in Germany are infected Stuxnet.
